After the Storm: A Kansas City Homeowner’s Guide to Tornado & Severe Weather Cleanup

If you live in the Kansas City metro, severe weather isn’t a question of if — it’s when. The April 13, 2026 tornadoes that tore through Hillsdale, Ottawa, and the Linn County–Bates County corridor were a sharp reminder. Officials reported 113 structures affected in Hillsdale alone, with 42 sustaining significant damage or destroyed. An EF1 tornado tracked nearly 24 miles between Blue Mound, Kansas, and Worland, Missouri, with winds of 105 mph. KSHB 41KSHB 41

And that was just one storm system. The June 2025 storms brought confirmed tornadoes near Raytown and Independence, flash flooding across Jackson County, and damage as far as the Truman Sports Complex.

When the sirens stop and the rain clears, the work begins. This guide walks you through what to do after a tornado, hailstorm, severe wind event, or flood hits your KC home — from those first hazardous hours to hauling away the debris and getting your property back to normal.

Step 1: Safety First — Before You Touch Anything

The hours immediately after a storm are the most dangerous. More injuries happen during cleanup than during the storm itself. Before you start hauling debris, work through this checklist:

Stay out of damaged structures. If your roof is partially collapsed, walls are leaning, or the foundation looks compromised, don’t go inside until a structural inspector or your insurance adjuster has cleared it. This is non-negotiable.

Watch for downed power lines. Treat every downed line as live. Stay at least 35 feet away. Call Evergy (KCMO and most of the metro) or KCP&L immediately. Don’t move tree limbs that are touching or near power lines — wait for crews.

Check for gas leaks. If you smell gas, leave the house, don’t flip any switches, and call Spire from outside.

Document everything before you clean. Photos. Video. Wide shots and close-ups. Every damaged item, every torn shingle, every flooded room. Your insurance adjuster will want this, and “before cleanup” footage is far more valuable than “after.”

Gear up properly. Heavy work gloves, steel-toe boots, long sleeves, eye protection, and a good N95 mask (especially for any flood damage where mold spores are airborne).

Step 2: Contact Your Insurance Company — Same Day

The faster you file, the faster you’re in the queue. Most major insurers have 24-hour storm response lines. Call them, get a claim number, and ask:

  • When will an adjuster come out?
  • What’s covered for emergency mitigation (tarps, board-ups, water extraction)?
  • Do you need to keep damaged items, or can you dispose of them after documentation?
  • What records and receipts do they need from cleanup contractors?

Keep every receipt — debris removal, dumpster rental, contractor invoices, hotel stays if you’ve been displaced. Most homeowners’ policies cover storm cleanup costs as part of the claim, but only if you’ve documented them.

Step 3: Sort Your Debris into Categories

This is where most people get stuck. Storm debris isn’t all the same, and it doesn’t all go in the same place. Separating it now saves you headaches (and hauling fees) later.

Vegetative debris — fallen trees, branches, limbs, leaves, brush. This is usually the biggest pile after a Kansas City storm. KCMO and most metro suburbs run special storm debris pickup programs after major events, but timelines can stretch into weeks. If you need it gone faster, a dumpster handles it cleanly.

Construction and demolition debris (C&D) — damaged roofing, siding, fencing, drywall, flooring, decking, broken windows, gutters. This is the heaviest, densest material and almost always needs a roll-off. Curbside trash service won’t take it.

Household goods — water-damaged furniture, soaked carpet, ruined appliances, toys, bedding. Anything that got wet in a flooded basement or through a damaged roof should be assumed unsalvageable unless it’s hardwood furniture you can fully dry within 48 hours.

Hazardous waste — propane tanks, paint cans, pesticides, batteries, oil, fuel containers. Do not put these in a dumpster. KCMO Household Hazardous Waste runs a free drop-off program at their facility on Deramus Avenue. Johnson County residents have a similar program through their Household Hazardous Waste facility in Mission.

Electronics and appliances with refrigerants — fridges, freezers, AC units. These need special handling. Most scrap yards and appliance recyclers will take them, but they shouldn’t go in a standard roll-off.

Step 4: Tarp, Board, and Mitigate Quickly

If your roof has holes, your windows are blown out, or water is still coming in, mitigation comes before cleanup. Insurance companies require homeowners to take “reasonable steps” to prevent further damage — meaning if you don’t tarp a damaged roof and it rains again, additional damage may not be covered.

Standard temporary fixes:

  • Heavy-duty blue tarps secured with 2x4s for damaged roofs
  • Plywood for blown-out windows
  • Plastic sheeting for damaged exterior walls
  • Sandbags or rapid water extraction for flooded basements

Most KC roofers run emergency tarp services after major storms. Expect waitlists after a regional event — book early.

Step 5: Get a Dumpster on Site

For anything more than minor cleanup, a roll-off dumpster is the difference between “this will take a month” and “this will take a weekend.”

Here’s a rough sizing guide based on typical KC storm cleanups:

10-yard — Light cleanup. Some fence damage, a few branches, a single damaged room. Suits smaller properties or apartment turnovers.

15-yard — Moderate damage. Significant tree limbs, damaged roofing on a small home, partial fencing replacement, water-damaged carpet from one or two rooms.

20-yard — The workhorse for KC storm cleanup. Full roof tear-off and replacement after hail, multiple downed trees, full basement gut after flooding, significant siding and fencing damage. This is what most homeowners need after a serious storm.

30-yard — Major damage. Whole-house cleanout after a tornado strike, large commercial property cleanup, multi-property estate cleanup after a regional event.

KC Dumpster Rentals delivers across the metro — from Cass County and Jackson County to Johnson County — with same-day or next-day delivery on most orders. Flat-rate pricing starts at $325. After major storms, we prioritize affected areas to keep cleanup moving.

Step 6: Tackle Tree and Branch Removal Safely

Trees account for the majority of post-storm debris in the KC metro. Mature oaks, maples, and elms across older neighborhoods like Brookside, Waldo, Hyde Park, and Independence become serious hazards in high winds.

Don’t cut anything tangled with power lines. Period. Wait for utility crews.

Be cautious with chainsaws. Chainsaw injuries spike after every major storm. If you’re not experienced, hire it out — most KC tree services run emergency response after major events.

Cut to length for the dumpster. Standard rule for most roll-offs: branches and trunks no longer than 4 feet, fitting flat within the container. Don’t fill a 20-yard with three uncut trunks — you’re paying for air.

Keep it dirt-free. Don’t pile root balls full of soil into your dumpster. Most dumpster rentals (including ours) have weight limits, and dirt is dense. Shake or knock off soil before loading.

Step 7: Handle Water-Damaged Materials Fast

Flood damage doesn’t wait. Mold can establish within 24–48 hours in warm, humid KC summer conditions. If your basement flooded, your priority order is:

  1. Pump or extract standing water (call a water mitigation company if it’s significant)
  2. Remove wet drywall to at least 12 inches above the high-water line
  3. Pull up wet carpet, padding, and underlay — these almost never recover
  4. Remove wet insulation — it holds water indefinitely
  5. Run industrial dehumidifiers and fans for at least 72 hours
  6. Dispose of porous materials that got wet — mattresses, upholstered furniture, particleboard

A 20-yard dumpster handles a typical flooded basement gut. You’ll be surprised how fast it fills.

Step 8: Don’t Skip the Long Game

Once the debris is gone and the immediate damage is patched, schedule the bigger repairs:

  • Roof inspection — even if your roof “looks fine,” hail damage often shows up months later as leaks. Get a free inspection from a reputable KC roofer.
  • Tree assessment — surviving trees that took heavy stress may drop limbs in the next storm. An arborist can identify hazards.
  • Foundation check — flooding can shift foundations. Watch for new cracks over the following weeks.
  • HVAC servicing — flooded systems and storm-damaged units need professional inspection before reuse.

When to Call vs When to DIY

A practical rule of thumb for KC homeowners:

DIY territory: Yard debris, fence damage, minor siding repairs, single-room water damage caught early, cosmetic interior damage.

Call a pro: Roof damage, structural damage, electrical issues, gas line concerns, basement flooding more than a few inches deep, anything involving trees near power lines.

Always rent a dumpster: Any job where the debris pile is bigger than the bed of a pickup truck.
